Taking another look at the life, culture, politics, and society on the Japanese Islands from the perspectives of specific instances

At Area of Japanese Studies, students take up the life, culture, politics, and society of the people who live on the Japanese Islands as their subjects of studies. Specifically, various instances of the history, life, politics, religion, thoughts, education, art, etc. of the people who live in the respective local places are dealt with and studied into not by a bird’s eye view, but by an ant’s or dragonfly’s eye view based on the interests of or the issues spotted by each individual student. Based on such studies, the combined total of the life, culture, politics, and society of the people who live in local places is looked into broadly in multiple and compound ways as well as through mutual comparisons. The studies of Japan conducted in the aforesaid manner are intended to foster development of globally useful talents who possess firm social capability of taking sensible decisions to respond to and resolve those types of issues which arise in the contemporary society where fluidity is apparent internationally and ethnically.

Area of Japanese Studies offers not only lectures on basic knowledge and methodologies, but also lectures and seminars focusing on the life, politics, religion, and thoughts of the respective and specific local places as well as field work programs to spot and look into the issues that arise out of those local situations which are taken from the scenes of actual daily life in the farm, mountain, or coastal villages, towns and cities spreading over the Japanese Islands. Of particular importance are seminars and field work programs where students themselves pursue studies at their own initiatives, make presentations based on their own findings and reviews, engage in mutual serious discussions, thereby polish and step up their original ways of perceiving and study methodologies towards writing each one’s graduation dissertation.
